Preclinical Assessment of Primary Plants: An Experimental Analysis of the Effects of Lichen, Moss, and Fern Extracts on Human Carcinoma Cell Lines

The result of this research indicate that extracts prepared from whole primitive plant homogenates display potent anti-cancer properties. The reproducible anti-cancer activity of these novel products signifies that many species of primitive mosses, ferns, and lichens may possess anti-cancer properties that may have potential use in treating various forms of human carcinomas. The extracts were assessed in several types of human carcinomas including glioblastoma mulforme, as well as both primary and metastatic colon lines. Rapid cell death, linear dose responses, and minimal tumor regrowth have all been shown utilizing PRIMPLEX (primitive plant extract).

The anti-cancer activity of the extracts was assessed in two ways: the therapeutic response of the cell resulting in cell death (on both monolayer and spheroids), and the preventative inhibition of solid spheroid tumor formation in vitro. FITC-Phalloidin stained cells under confocal laser microscopy indicated that the plant extracts tested disrupted the actin cytoskeleton, which was associated with solid tumor death.
