The Mathematics Department has changed the prerequisites for certain lower‑level mathematics courses.  These changes will affect students who have not finished their University Requirement in Mathematics by the end of the Fall 2004 semester.

1.            Effective with Wintersession 2005 and Spring 2005, the current MAT 119 Intermediate Algebra B will be renumbered as MAT 102.  In the notes below, we will refer to Intermediate Algebra B as MAT 102(119).

2.            Effective with Wintersession 2005 and Spring 2005, MAT 101 Intermediate Algebra A will no longer be a sufficient prerequisite for the following Mathematics courses:
         MAT 103         Mathematics for the Liberal Arts;
         MAT 105         Mathematics for Elementary Education;
         MAT 107         Elementary Statistics;
         MAT 108         Mathematics for the Natural Sciences.
The prerequisite for these courses will then be any one of the following:
         MAT 100 Intermediate Algebra A and B;
         MAT 102 (119) Intermediate Algebra B;
         Satisfactory score on the placement exam;
         Transfer credit equivalent to any of the above.

               So, if a student is registering for an intermediate algebra course in Fall 2004,  he/she should register for MAT 100, not MAT 101, unless he/she wishes to proceed through the material at a slower pace (See #3 below.).  If a student registers for MAT 101 in Fall 2004, he/she will subsequently also have to take MAT 102 (119) before going on to ANY other Mathematics course.  A student should take MAT 101 in Summer 2004 ONLY if he/she is planning on taking one of MAT 103, 105, 107, or 108 in Fall 2004.

3.            MAT 101 Intermediate Algebra A and MAT 102 (currently numbered 119) Intermediate Algebra B, taken in sequence, will be the equivalent of MAT 100 Intermediate Algebra A and B.  The MAT 101/102 sequence will allow students to move through the MAT 100 material at a slower pace.  Students taking MAT 101 in Fall 2004 or later will also have to take MAT 102 before proceeding on to ANY other Mathematics course.

Fall 2004 is the last registration period in which MAT 101 will serve as the prerequisite for MAT 103, 105, 107, and 108.  After Fall 2004, MAT 101 will only serve as a prerequisite for MAT 102(119).  For Fall 2004, registration for MAT 101 requires the permission of the Mathematics Department in order to ensure that only students who need or want to be in the MAT 101/102 sequence are in the course.  The only exception is the section that is administered through the Disability Resource Center.

4.            Effective Wintersession 2005 and Spring 2005, the prerequisite for MAT 100 Intermediate Algebra A and B will be completion of MAT 095 with a C- or better.  So, Summer 2004 and Fall 2004 are the last registration periods in which a D in MAT 095 will directly qualify students for MAT 100.

Beginning with Wintersession 2005, students with a D+, D, or D- in MAT 095 will have to take the MAT 101/102 sequence; they will not be allowed to register for MAT 100.  However, those students could choose to repeat MAT 095 and earn a C- or better.

5.            Effective Fall 2008, we will offer MAT 100, and we will offer both the 1.5 credit version of MAT 102 and the 3-credit version of MAT 102. Fall 2008 is the last semester that the 1.5-credit version of MAT 102 will be offered.

Beginning with Spring 2009 and all semesters following: We will offer MAT 100, and we will offer only the 3-credit version of MAT 102, Intermediate Algebra (Extended).  A Student should take MAT 100 if: (1) Their placement level is "MAT 100", or OR (2) They have passed MAT 095 with a grade of C- or better. A student should take the 3-credit MAT 102 if: (1) Their placement level is MAT 102, OR (2) They have passed MAT 095 with a grade of D+, D, or D-, OR (3) They are eligible for MAT 100, but they wish to take a slower-paced course.
