Superb Weather
Fruits/Vegetables that taste like God meant them to taste
Hospitable, friendly people who love to drink chai  (tea)
Near miss traffic accidents at almost every intersection
Decrepit beat-up busses, durable old Russian made Lada cars
Varied scenery from dry and barren, to lush and green
These are the thoughts that first come to my mind when I think about how I would describe Azerbaijan.
I have tried to put together a series of pictures that will give people some “feel” for this country, and perhaps some information they can use when planning a trip to Baku.

Why it is called, “The Land of Fire”

Slide 11
Much of the country side seems dry, and barren

Slide 17
….but so is every other oil producing country.
It doesn’t take a long drive to start seeing some hills and mountains in the north
Slide 20
and lush green citrus trees to the south.

The entire eastern coast is a beach.
The beaches in the south have
black sand.
Slide 32
Slide 33
It is a poor country.  In some parts making $35 month is a decent salary.
Baku is on a peninsular that juts into the Caspian Sea

are within the walls of the Old City.

From the Maiden’s Tower, Baku looks like this.
Slide 63
Slide 64
Slide 65
To buy a carpet, go to the carpet block by the Tower.
As you drink tea, they will proceed to unroll carpet after carpet.
Slide 68
Slide 69
Right outside the walls of the Old City you find the central shopping area…
…known as Fountain Square
Slide 72
There are four things of interest
to you there:
Slide 74
2. There is the country’s only McDonalds
3. A Street to Buy “Junk”
Slide 77
4. Software and Music CDs for $3 each
The Soviets liked to build parks and put up statues
…and the people enjoy them
Slide 81
Five to ten dollars will give you your fill good food.

I have to admit sturgeon with pomegranate sauce on top is really delicious – and there are few places in the world you can find this delicacy.
Slide 83
…as well as all kinds of fruits and salads.
Slide 85
Slide 86
If you like to dodge potholes and rocks, and watch for animals on the road, then you will not be bothered by road conditions.  You will need to get an internat’l drivers license at the AAA.
Slide 88
The city traffic is a free-for-all
Khazar University is about a 25 minute drive from downtown.

Slide 95
Outside Baku, development is slower.
Slide 97
Back home, you don’t see sheep tied up next to the butcher shop while the carcass of a friend is hanging outside
