Works in this section include several bibliographic guides or general reviews of research by experts in the field. The fourth edition of The English Romantic Poets (1985) edited by Frank Jordan remains useful but is outdated. Buley library has Literature of the Romantic Period (1998) edited by O'Neill; it covers a broader range of subjects and includes less well-known poets, novelists, essayists, and political writers. Publication and study of women writers of the period over the last two decades is an important aspect of the field: see the bibliographic guide edited by Jackson in addition to works cited in the subsections on Primary and Secondary Anthologies, Literary-Critical Studies, and Women & Gender.

The Oxford Companion to the Romantic Age: British Culture, 1776-1832 is highly recommended: see especially the essays in Part One on “Revolution,” “Democracy,” “Women,” “Slavery,” “Prints,” “Painting,” “Poetry,” "Religion," and “History”; in Part Two, look over as many entries on writers and genres as you can. The Companion is available in Buley. The Cambridge Companion to English Literature edited by Mee and Keymer offers a different perspective on the period, dating it from 1740-1830. ____________________________________________________________________
