Anthologies: Primary
The anthologies of primary works listed in this section cover a broad range of British Romantic literature, although they rarely include entire novels, epics, or other long narratives. They feature both established and less well-known writers, focusing on specific groups or movements—women writers, laboring class poets, writing on slavery, periodical verse, and the like. A good text for beginners is the Norton Anthology, but the anthologies edited by Mellor and Matlack and by Wu are more inclusive. On women writers, Feldman's anthology is the more thorough and up-to-date. And for the burgeoning area of writings on slavery, the most thorough anthology is edited by Kitson and Lee (8 volumes), although the anthologies by Gates and Andrews, Basker, and Wood are more accessible and include writings from Anglo-Americans outside the Romantic era; Wood's introductions to each selection are excellent.
