Anthologies: Secondary

Anthologies of secondary works consist primarily of essays by various scholars, covering many different critical approaches and topics. The concept of “Romanticism” has always been subject to debate: for work up to the 1970s, see the collections by Abrams, Frye, Gleckner and Enscoe, and Bloom, which contain theoretical statements as well as important work on individual writers. Since the 1970s, further theoretical developments and new research have reshaped the field, as witnessed in the volumes edited by Chase, Copley and Whale, and Johnston. This subsection should be used in conjunction with Literary-Critical Studies under Research Areas, which contains book-length studies by many of the same scholars.
