Journals

Situated between the 18th and 19th centuries, British Romantic studies forms part of the so-called “long eighteenth century” (1660-1830) and profoundly influences the Victorian era (1837-1901). Journals covering both centuries include scholarship on Romantic period writers. The standard journal in the field is Studies in Romanticism, published quarterly; European Romantic Review is broader in scope and is affiliated with the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism; Romanticism: The Journal of Romantic Culture and Criticism is published in Britain and focuses on the period 1750-1850.

Many of the major writers of the period—Austen, Blake, Wordsworth, Byron, Keats, and Shelley—have journals devoted to their work: the Keats-Shelley Journal and Wordsworth Circle are listed because they include scholarly work on other Romantic writers. Students should also consult the annual MLA bibliography for studies in both the period at large and in individual writers; Studies in English Literature (SEL) offers annual reviews of scholarship in its section "Recent Studies in the Nineteenth Century" written by top scholars in the field. _______________________________________________________________
