Literary-Critical Studies

This section contains highly diverse and varied material, and students are advised to consult the bibliographic aids and the instructor for guidance in this area. The reading list is organized by sub-categories: Introductory Studies, Historical Contexts, Genres and Modes, Gothic, Novels, Specialized Studies, and Theories of Romanticism.

For Introductory studies, Bloom (1961) is a good place to start for students without reading knowledge of the poetry; his visionary approach is complemented by Watson; Breen and Noble offer a broad, readable overview; Day is intelligent and advanced. For Contexts, see the introductory studies by Abrams (1963), Bate, Butler (1982), and Williams; Chandler, Keen, Kaiser, and Mee offer advanced studies; Klancher and Newlyn investigate reading publics; Mellor and Poovey cover women writers. On Genres and modes, Curran is the best introduction; Kelly and Kiely are solid guides on Novels.

For Theories of Romanticism, traditional essays by Lovejoy, Wellek, Frye, Abrams, Bloom, and others are collected in Bloom (1970) and Gleckner and Enscoe (1974) listed under Anthologies: Secondary; recommended book-length studies by these authors include Frye (1968) and Abrams (1971). Challenges to traditional views include texts by De Man (1984), Rajan (1980, 1990), McGann (1983), Arac (1987), and Wang (1996).
