Welcome To The SCSU Foreign Films Homepage!

Featured Artists

Directors, actors, actresses, screen writers, cinematographers, musicians, costume designers are the artists that create films which both entertain and enrich our lives. After you have watched Frederico Fellini's La Strada, you will never forget the theme melody by Nino Rota. It is so achingly moving that La Strada will be a lesser movie without the music. Likewise, the cinematography of Christopher Doyle and Pin Bing Lee in In the Mood for Love has complemented Wong Kar-Wai's screenply and direction to create an exquisite film of transcental beauty. Selected artists from different backgrounds and diverse cultures will be featured here periodically.

Chow
Yun Fat

Pedro
Almodóvar

Chow Yun Fat the actor and Pedro Almodóvar the director/screenwriter do not have too much in common. In fact they do not even speak the same language. However they are featured here because in my opinion they excel in their roles through their devotion, sincerity and enthusiasm. Moreover, they are willing to take risk in exploring unpopular and even unchartered territories.

Whether playing the ruthless yet loyal undercover cop in City on Fire, the struggling single parent in The Story of Ah Long, the mischievous and effeminate playboy in Eighth Happiness or the celebrated conductor torn between the love of two women in Dream Lover, Chow Yun Fat delivered with conviction, intelligence, wit and charm. One feels so fortunate being able to experience the numerous characters he plays in over sixty or so films.

Pedro Almodóvar creates films that are moving, sensual, visually stunning yet disturbing and often thought provoking. He challenges the prevailing moral and social normalcy by having the protagonist in Talk to Her as a male nurse named Benigno falling deeply in love with a patient in coma who may never wake up. His devotion to her is unconditional and complete. He takes care of her more tenderly and lovingly than a mother would of her dearest child. He talks to her and pours his heart out to her in spite of her total silence. This unilateral relationship goes on for four years until one day he was so overcome by passion while narrating to her an erotic silent movie he had just seen that he committed what society and most people would considered a heinous crime. Can we condemn Benigno as a criminal for what he did out of love? Human society is often ruled by religious dogma, ethical codes and social restraints. Almodóvar questions the justification and validity of such rules and bondages by expressing human relationships that are unconventional, exceptional, bizarre and even queer. He delves into cross-sexual issues in All About My Mother with the same vigor and extraordinary insight.
