I always start with the image. I get an image in my head and I start wanting to get it moving, to build a story around it and then make a film out of it. - writer/director Tom Tykwer
The partnership of John Woo and Chow Yun Fat has resulted in the creation of some of the most brilliant and passionate action thrillers. This film was made when both the director and actor were at their prime. Hard Boiled is well recognized as one of the very best of this genre. It has inspired and was emulated by many directors, including Quentin Tarantino.
The story of the gypsies struggling in poverty and precarious circumstances in modern day Europe. In spite of such dire existence, there is the devotion, unconditional love, generosity and forgiveness of the grandmother for her grandchildren. That is the inspiration and universal appeal of this unforgettable movie.
