Argument from Anthropomorphism

1. The idea of God is the idea of a being with human-like characteristics such as reason, emotion, possessing a body, and the ability to use language, though lacking many or all of our flaws and limitations.

2. There are two explanations for the origin of this idea: (A) The self-revelation of God or gods to human beings; or (B) People creating the idea of a being or beings that resembles them but are infinitely more powerful, intelligent, benevolent, etc, because we want to believe that there is an order and purpose guiding the natural forces beyond our control, a powerful being looking out for us, an afterlife that better than our earthly existence, etc.

3. The second explanation (anthropomorphism) is the best explanation of the origin of the idea of God.

4. Therefore, the idea of God is merely a human creation (Inference to the Best Explanation 1-3).

5. All ideas (of non-artifacts) that are merely human creations are ideas of things that don’t actually exist.

6. Therefore, God does not exist (Barbara, 4, 5).
