The Ontological
Argument
“Perfection entails existence”
1. The idea of God is the idea of the greatest conceivable
being.
2. God either exists or is merely an idea in our minds.
3. If God is merely an idea in our minds then it is possible to conceive an
even greater being: a being that has all of the characteristics of God plus
existence.
4. However, we can conceive no being greater than God (Definition of ‘greatest
conceivable being’ 1).
5. Therefore, God is not a mere idea in our minds (Modus Tollens
3, 4).
6. Therefore, God exists (Disjunctive Syllogism 2, 5).
