Philosophy of Education Final Exam Essay Questions

2. What is Dewey’s definition of democracy and what implications does it have for education? Then critically evaluate Dewey’s notion of democracy in education, considering both its positive and negative features.
3. What role should social and political issues have in the classroom? Friere and many multiculturalists argue that one of the primary jobs of the teacher is to confront social problems. Even Reich believes that it is impossible to avoid some controversial cultural issues. Given the deep divisions in liberal societies on social issues, to what extent, if at all, should a teacher address such issues in the classroom? (Wishy-washy answers like ‘It depends on the teacher’ are unacceptable.) Summarize the views of Friere, Banks (in the Fullinwider article) and Reich on this issue and the rationale they give supporting their views. Then state you own view and justify it.
4. Privatizing education through the use of vouchers and granting particular religious and ethnic communities greater control over the curriculum are controversial issues in education. To what extent should parents control the education of their children, and to what extent is this the responsibility of the greater community? Summarize Walzer, Brighouse, and Reich’s views on this issue, and then critically evaluate them while stating and justifying your own view on this issue.
