Philosophy of Education Paper #1
What is the purpose of education? Why do we spend billions of dollars every year to support educational institutions and worry about how well they are performing? Write a brief exploratory paper examining the purpose of education understood in the broadest possible sense, and not a pat definition like to facilitate learning. Why do we think that education (and learning) is so important?
Structure of the Paper:
1. Introduction (one or two sentences) Why is it crucial that we consider the purpose of education?
2. First section (one paragraph) List, in an organized manner, all the various purposes people ascribe to education. This will require some brainstorming.
3. Second and central section (two or more paragraphs) Select the purpose that you think is most important and explain in detail why, contrasting it with some of the most popular definitions of the purpose of education.
4. Conclusion (one or two sentences) What does this purpose tell us about education, i.e., what are one or two insights about the nature of education that it reveals?
