Philosophy of Education Paper #3

Dewey distinguishes his educational philosophy from progressivism and traditional education by stressing the experimental nature of the curriculum, i.e., the constant interaction and mutual adjustment of the curriculum and one’s observation about the current group of students one is teaching. Explain Dewey’s view in detail and contrast it with the other two educational philosophies mentioned above, using Rousseau and Plato as examples. Before writing your paper, carefully reread the relevant passages from Dewey. State the advantages that Dewey believes his experimental approach to education possesses. In your paper, illustrate Dewey’s approach by developing an original example of his notion of psychologizing the curriculum for your particular subject area and intended students.
