Paper #1
Guidelines
In this paper, I want you to summarize the main features of existentialism and phenomenology, and then compare and contrast them with one another. This paper will be more expository than the others, and its main purpose is to reveal how well the class is following the readings and lectures.
In your discussion of existentialism, make sure to discuss the significance of the name, as well as the concepts of authenticity and inauthenticity. Your summary of phenomenology should cover Husserl’s critique of naturalism and historicism, and the concepts of intentionality and the intuition of essences. Finally, examine the similarities and differences between these two approaches to philosophy, considering how phenomenology influenced existentialism and the points of disagreement between them.
Sources and Citations – Use at least one quotation each from Heidegger, Sartre, Husserl, and Zahavi. Provide full citations for any quotations or paraphrases (not including class lectures), using any standard method that provides all of the relevant information (including exact page numbers). Keep in mind that many internet sources are unreliable.

Place full citations in endnotes or a bibliography placed at the very end of the paper. Citations in the text or in footnotes should include only the author’s last name and the page numbers.
