Paper #3
Guidelines
In this paper, I want you to examine Sartre and Beauvoir’s political involvement with Marxism and the Algerian resistance in light of existentialism’s shift in focus toward social groups. After providing a detailed summary of the concept of the gaze and its application to the social identity of gender, use it to analyze both the class and anticolonial struggles. Then evaluate these struggles as well as Sartre and Beauvoir’s involvement in them: Which, if any, of the groups involved were acting authentically? Was Sartre and Beauvoir’s involvement authentic? In hindsight, do you think they were the correct decisions? Explain and justify your claims, examining the relationship between authenticity and other normative categories such as justice and ethical responsibility.
Sources and Citations – Use at least two quotations each from Heidegger and Sartre. Provide full citations for any quotations or paraphrases (not including class lectures), using any standard method that provides all of the relevant information (including exact page numbers).
