Derrida Secondary Sources and Links

Secondary Sources (Unless otherwise noted, on reserve in the Library. I also have copies of most of these books in my office.)

Simon Critchley, The Ethics of Deconstruction: Derrida and Levinas (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 1999).

(One of the best discussions of Derrida’s conception of responsibility and his relation to Levinas)

Herman Rapaport, The Later Derrida: Reading the Recent Work (New York: Routledge, 2003).

(Like the next book, more technical and wider ranging than Critchley, but a useful resource on particular concepts like singularity.)

Richard Beardsworth, Derrida and the Political (London: Routledge, 1996)

Rodolphe Gasché, The Tain of the Mirror: Derrida and the Philosophy of Reflection (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1986).

(Like the next book, this one focuses on the concept of deconstruction in Derrida’s earlier thought.)

Jonathan Culler, On Deconstruction: Theory and Criticism after Structuralism (Ithaca, N.Y.: Cornell University Press, 1982).

Nancy J. Holland, ed., Feminist Interpretations of Jacques Derrida (University Park, Pa.: Pennsylvania State University Press, 1997)

(Two of the other CSU campuses have this book. The table of contents is listed in the library catalog.)

Jack Reynolds and Jonathan Roffe, eds., Understanding Derrida (New York: Continuum, 2004).

(I’m not familiar with this book, but judging from the table of contents it looks very promising. None of the CSU libraries has it.)

The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Derrida. A very good overview of the development of and main concepts in his thought. The entries in the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy and Encyclopaedia Britannica are also useful, though they focus primarily on his earlier thought. They can be accessed online through the SCSU Library website.
