In class, we are currently examining a theory of social divisions (e.g., race and sex) and discrimination, which maintains that though there is no fixed fundamental difference between these groups these divisions remain pervasive because they are deeply ingrained in our conceptions of the human nature and society. Through a detailed exploration of the issues of race and sex in the plot of Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, carefully explain this theory, including the notions of stereotypes, norms for social groups and human nature, and the difference between oppression (systematic or institutional) and mere discrimination (isolated and intentional). In addition, critically examine this theory, its strengths and weaknesses, and determine whether it stands up to scrutiny, providing justification for your conclusion.
