COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course, "The Post-Harlem Renaissance Novel," deals with the triumph of naturalism of the 1940's, myths, legends, and rituals of the 1950's, and socio­philosophical and folkloric issues that are discussed to help readers and students to understand the African American culture and civilization since the 1940's which still have their effects on the present day African Americans and their culture. As social critics and articulators of Black agony, the novelists have attempted, in their individual ways, to suggest fictionally solutions to the economic, socio-cultural, and political problems of their people.These are the issues we will deal with in the course.

 

COURSE GOALS & OBJECTIVES

The course is designed to create students' awareness of Black culture through Black wriyings, which it is hoped, will eventuate in better race relations among Americans of all extractions. To this end, students will

A. learn and understand the historical development of Black culture in America;

B. demonstrate mastery of the reccommended texts through the discussions of major characters and events of the texts;

C. demonstrate critical proclivity by using some literary terms and techniques in their class discussions and written assignments; and

D. show mastery of the contents of the texts by writing papers that discuss race relations between Blacks and Whites, as expounded by individual authors.
